Make mine a cozy mystery series, please.

It has been 5 years since I published my crime fiction series on Amazon, Kobo, Google Play, Barnes and Noble and Apple iBooks. Since that time, I've been ghost-writing, writing under a pen name, trying out genres, testing my skills and pushing myself out of my comfort zone. Some stuff worked, some stuff didn't. Some stuff worked for readers but not for me, and vice versa.

It was fun and educational. But after five years of experimentation, I started thinking about killing people--cozy mystery-style. To scratch that itch, I wrote a traditional mystery (also known as a 'whodunit') and it morphed into a full-blown series with five titles in the pipeline.

A St. Ives Book Club Mystery is set in a tiny hamlet in Southern Ontario where a murder mystery book club decides to try their hand at solving cold cases.

Who killed Jenny Blake?

In the gentle hamlet of St. Ives, a killer roams free.

In 1975, seventeen-year-old Jenny Blake was found strangled in the ruins behind the abandoned St. Ives Abbey. Her murderer was never caught. Forty-four years later, an advertisement in the local newspaper draws seven people, including Avery Holmes, to the home of Elliot Marks with the purpose of forming a murder mystery book club.

Within minutes of the first meeting, Marks puts forward an intriguing proposal: Instead of reading about murder, why not try solving one - beginning with who killed Jenny Blake?

Was it her ex-boyfriend, the brilliant but withdrawn Jesse Sutcliffe? Or Duncan Carmichael, the attractive local politician who was dating Jenny at the time of the murder? Or was it the eccentric Elliot Marks himself, who is hiding his connection to the dead girl. For Avery Holmes, poking into an old murder case is a risky proposition. After all, waking a killer who thought he or she had gotten away with murder could lead to ... well ... murder.

Advertisement for Murder is available for pre-order on Amazon. Launch date is October 1, 2019.

For 90 days, it will only be available on Amazon. The side hustle to writing is marketing and I'm experimenting with Kindle Unlimited. If the KU love isn't there, I'll release this title and subsequent titles to all retailers. It's not an easy call to make, choosing to be exclusive for 90 days. I could be making a mistake. We shall see. The print edition is out now and available on Amazon. I don't do Expanded Distribution anymore because I'm not interested in competing with third-party sellers for sales. A sale through them nets me 0.23. Um. No. So it's available in print through the regular Amazon channels for $8.99 and if you buy the print, you can pick up the digital for 0.99.

digital ISBN: 978-1-988003-63-4
print ISBN: 978-1-988003-62-7

And I'm back to writing mystery! (I wonder what is says about me that I'm happiest when I'm thinking about how to get away with murder....)

Happy October!

Wuthering Heights Variation Series Finale!

"What a wonderful ride this series has been to write. I was awed all over again by Emily Bronte's masterpiece. Pulling at the strands of the story as it jumps through time, diving into the subtext, time and again I was made giddy by how much meaning she packed into this brilliant tale."

Wind in the Heather is available for pre-order!

The final book in N J Dorrian's Wuthering Heights Variation Series can be pre-ordered on Google Play, Amazon, Kobo or by following Books2Read to Nook or Apple.

Release date is September 3, 2019 with the paperback edition available now.

Hareton Earnshaw, the natural inheritor to Wuthering Heights, is a solitary, rough young man, widely regarded as having been cheated of his birthright by his guardian, Heathcliff. He’s been made into a labourer on his family’s estate, and the gossip concerning him is that he is ‘too simple’ to know he’s been wronged.

Hareton is not the simpleton the gossips believe him to be; he has no illusions about his uncle’s harsh nature, but the eighteen-year-old is not able to hate where he has been loved. When he meets thirteen-year-old Catherine Linton of Thrushcross Grange, new emotion stirs in his secret heart and Hareton begins to long for a life withheld from him, bringing him into conflict with Heathcliff’s agenda.

Meanwhile, Emily Brontë’s joy that Wuthering Heights has found a publisher is short-lived when she divines that her work will be overshadowed by her older sister’s Jane Eyre. Even so, she must lay the ghosts of Cathy and Heathcliff to rest, even as her own life is coming to an end.

A Wuthering Heights Variation NEW RELEASE!

Book Three of N J Dorrian's re-imagining of Emily Bronte's classic novel, Wuthering Heights, is out!

Heathcliff’s loveless marriage to Isabella Linton has tragic and far-reaching consequences for Cathy. The mystery of why Heathcliff took that fatal step haunts Emily until a conversation with the local stationer offers a surprising revelation. But will it be enough to set their spirits--and hers--to rest at last?
Cooped up over a long winter in Haworth parsonage with her two more successful sisters, Emily is resolved to get at the truth of Heathcliff and Cathy's love, even as she struggles to accept her fate as an unpublished author of an unloved work.

Available for sale on Amazon, Kobo, Google Play, iBooks and Barnes and Noble as well as a host of libraries and subscription services.

N J Dorrian is working hard on finishing up the series this summer with Wind in the Heather. She has no words to add to this blog on the process or why she dove back into this series after a *cough* four-year hiatus. So I'll spill the tea: A fan of the first two books emailed her asking when the series would be finished and apparently that's all she needed to get over her writer's block. Such a diva. (Thank you, dear reader!)

This summer put your phone down and pick up a book to read. Your brain will thank you.

SUMMER IS HERE! SUMMER AT AT LAST! AHHHH!!

Booktubers are a thing! Who knew?

Uh, everyone in the world under the age of seventy-five. And then there's me.

Send help.

I've just discovered this world of book reviewers who post incredible videos on YouTube about the books they've read, their reading challenges, their latest finds, their unhauls (oh, I love the unhauls!), their bookshelves, their reasons for having a 200 book TBR that they can't let go of....

Which I completely understand.

All to say I've been taken hostage. I can't stop watching. They've changed how I look at my shelves and the way I've approached my book selections. I've been in a rut!! A rut, I tell you!!

They read a book a day at times and not light reading either. Thank God I'm old enough that I've covered almost all of the classics. It's like hanging out with some really adorable book nerds who have the same level of passion for reading that I do!!

Here are links to my favs. Use at your own risk.

I'm very excited about this international promotion. I love reading crime fiction from all parts of the world and this is a cool opportunity for readers in Europe and Australia to discover Canadian crime fiction.

The stats: Iced Under made Canada's 2009 Arthur Ellis Shortlist for Best First Novel in Crime Fiction. Published in November 2008 by a small press and then re-released by me in April 2014, Iced Under continues to sell at home and abroad.

The blurb: With two young daughters in tow, Sara Wolesley abandons her comfortable life in Toronto to take possession of a rundown Quebec cottage on a frozen lake. But escape isn't that easy. Sara's life is on the brink of collapse when she finds a child trapped under the ice. Her name is Oralee Pelletier and she's been missing for five months.
